A volunteer who has helped to protect rivers and lakes in Cheshire from illegal fishing and poachers has received a top award from the Angling Trust.

Tony Weller joined the Trust’s Voluntary Bailiff Service (VBS) in the North West at its launch 15 months ago and is now Area Coordinator for the Cheshire and Wirral areas.

He received the Volunteering Excellence Award for his “exceptional contribution and commitment to protect fishing” from Dilip Sarkar MBE, the Trust’s National Enforcement Manager.

The VBS is part of the Trust’s Fisheries Enforcement Support Service which works with police forces, National Wildlife Crime Unit, Environment Agency and other partners to crack down on fisheries crime and illegal fishing. It is funded by fishing licence money.

Initially the only volunteer bailiff in the Cheshire area, Tony helped to promote the VBS among other anglers, tackle shops and angling clubs, and has seen volunteers in the county increase to 14.

Tony juggles his angling interests with running a busy car bodywork repair business but still finds time to patrol waters as a volunteer bailiff regularly and post detailed reports.

Dave Lees, the Trust’s Regional Enforcement Manager for the North West, said: “Tony is very professional in all he does and is a valued member of my team. His contribution to the VBS is exceptional and the growing success of the Cheshire-based volunteers is in no small part down to his enthusiasm.

“Tony is a very knowledgeable angler who is committed to helping protect the sport we all love, an absolute pleasure to work with and most deserving of this award.”

Tony said: “I am very pleased to receive the award. I started fishing at the age of nine and over the years the sport has given me a great deal of pleasure. It’s very satisfying for me to be able to put something constructive back into fishing.”
