Jan Porter was a well-respected specimen hunter, former match angler and valued Angling Trust ambassador who tragically passed away last year after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Jan underwent a number of major operations and over 30 rounds of chemotherapy before sadly losing his brave battle against the disease. Throughout all of this Jan maintained a positive mind set, continued to fish and remained determined to fight on.

The Jan Porter Charity Memorial has been organised for the weekend of 11-13th August and is an event aimed at raising money for the two amazing charities that helped Jan and his family throughout the duration of his extensive treatment – Cancer Research and The Aylesford Cancer Unit

Andy Lewis, good friend of Jan who has organised the fundraiser, explained: “We have designed an event that involves getting as many people out fishing as possible, whether it be throwing lures, drowning maggots or boilie bashing. As Jan covered all disciplines of the sport is seems only fitting to reflect this. Through Facebook we are running a page titled ‘The Jan Porter Charity Memorial’, which will act as the hub. The event will be trending under #redorrealtree on Instagram to reflect Jan’s transition from a red-clothed icon on the match angling circuit to a specimen angler who would wear nothing but the latest camouflage.

“The event has three layers. The first of these is a prize draw which you will be automatically entered into after a small donation of £5 to the Just Giving link on the Facebook page. This draw includes some absolutely amazing prizes and guiding days from some of the very best anglers across all disciplines. When making the donation, if you add the area of angling that most interests you to the comments section then it would help us match up the relevant prizes with their winners.

“The second part of the event will be a silent auction. This will have some incredible lots donated by some very well-known anglers and companies, including Shimano, FreeSpirit, Fox, Aqua Products, CC Moore, Dynamite Baits, Solar, Korda, Daiwa, Taska and RidgeMonkey.

“Prizes on offer include a week at Gigantica lakes for two in France, a day’s fishing with the England carp squad and guiding days with legends such as Dave Lane, Iain McMillian, Ian Russell, Bob Nudd, Tommy Pickering, Des Shipp, Dean Macey and Paul Garner just to name a few! Also in this will be some of Jan’s own tackle that has kindly been donated.

“The final part of the event is a photographic competition that again we will run through social media. Here we are asking anglers to wear either red or camouflage and post pictures of their angling adventures. This will be judged by Jan’s family the week following the memorial event and once again the prizes for this include tackle, guiding days and also some one of Jan’s own tackle.”

Andy added: “We hope the event will give the angling community an opportunity to celebrate the life of one of its true legends whilst raising a substantial donation for two incredible charities that made such a difference to Jan’s final months.”
