Mabere and Wickens top pair on Kennet and Avon

AT & CRT Logo 2017

The Kennet and Avon hosted the most recent round of the Angling Trust and Canal and River Trust pairs competition, with twenty four anglers making their way to the prolific canal venue. With cold overnight weather anglers at the draw were unsure how the canal would fish.

The Kennet and Avon however came up trumps with every angler carding over 3lbs! On the day A section proved to fish a little better with the two biggest individual weights on the day due to a few bonus fish feeding.

Match winner and A section winner Paul Leek was drawn in the first peg below Lock 69 and spent the first hour catching small silver fish. However a quick change to feeder saw Paul locate the bonus fish further up the lock cut, catching quality perch and skimmer. A decent run of these fish saw Paul take top spot weighing 20lbs 9ozs in the five hours.

The runner up spot was taken by Ben Dukes who netted 13lbs 14ozs of “silvers” plus bonus skimmers on the long and short pole this was enough for eleven points for his team. Third on A Section and half of the overall winners was Justin Mabere. Justin backed up his partner perfectly amassing a very respectable 8lb 10oz of predominantly silvers on the pole and scored his team ten points in the process.

The B section winner was Martin Wickens who took a nearly all roach net with a couple of skimmers on long and short pole to take the section with 8lbs 9ozs. This perfect 12 points added with the aforementioned ten points from Justin was enough for the pair to take the first qualifying spot from the match.

Second in B section was Robert Head, who fished a very busy match for 7lbs 9ozs of small fish again long and short pole. Third in the section was Robert Randall who carded an impressive 7lb 5oz, this was enough for ten points to back up his partner Ben Dukes on eleven making them the second pair to qualify on the day.

The final qualifying pair on the day were Stephen Brookes and David Mawby both men weighed over 5lb’s and scored 9 points each to take the critical final spot.

Our thanks must go to all the team at Reading and District for hositng the match and to the Canal and River Trust for all their support in the contest.
