Chambers and Beedham find the Bream on New Junction

The New Junction Canal hosted the most recent round of the Angling Trust and Canal and River Trust pairs competition, with 19 pairs making their way to the deep natural venue renowned for it's silver fish action.

The fishing on the canal across the two sections was rather temperamental with some sections averaging 3kg per angler and others struggling to make the 1kg barrier. Anglers that managed to hold the bonus skimmers and perch in their pegs managed the bigger weights and maximum points for their teams.

On A section Mal Chambers picked end peg 483 out of the draw bag. Mal put his draw to good use and went about putting 4kg 200g on the scales taking a maximum 20 points for his pair and taking 5th spot in the match as well. Second in the section was Nicky Crooks who managed a substantial 3kg 650g from peg 467 which was just enough to pip Dave Smiddy from peg 473 who amassed 3kg 450g in the five hours.

B Section was a rather different affair and produced both the top three weights along with some harder pegs. Keith Beedham also drew an end peg 403 and took individual honours on the day with an impressive 10kg 050g of pole caught bream. This also meant that Keith had bagged another 20 points for his pairing with A section winner Mal. Second in the section was David Frost who also managed a few bream next to Keith on peg 405 for 7kg 230g. Finishing third in the section was Barry Howgate who once more was on the low 400's on peg 407 amassing 4kg 930g in the five hours.

Looking at the all important pairs result the runaway perfect scoring winners were the aforementioned Mal and Keith fishing for Scunthorpe tackle, however it was a much tighter affair for the next two qualifying spots. Ben Taylor backed up Nicky Crooks 19 points with a B section 8th spot and 13 points, taking the Browning Ossets pairs score to 32 points and taking the second qualifying spot. The final pair to qualify were Shaun Wright and John Deakin who finished with a 4th and 7th in their respective sections, amassing 30pts and narrowly taking the third spot.

Our thanks must go to Paul Caygill for running the matches and to the Canal and River Trust for their continued support in the contest.
