The 2017 England Ladies Loch Style National took place at Pitsford Reservoir near Northampton on Sunday 3rd of September. Twenty ladies from around the country attended the event, each with the aim of becoming the National Champion and claiming a place in the England Ladies Fly Fishing team for 2018.

The previous two practice days had been challenging with bright sun and a flat calm reservoir however, on match day things changed for the better, anglers were greeted with overcast and breezy conditions which meant that expectations for a good days fishing were high. The fishing was exceptional with a rod average of over 5 fish per angler. Fish were caught over a wide area from Stone Barn to the Cliffs – with the local yacht club using most of the dam end. Fish were right up in the surface all day and most competitors were using a washing line with a booby on the point to attract the fish.

The event was won by Lianne Frost catching her eight fish limit on a fast glass line with a coral booby and diawl bachs drifting across the narrows. Runner up was Sheena Goode who was the first angler to catch her limit although she was unlucky that her fish were smaller. Sam Edmunds finished 3rd in her first appearance in the national. The best fish of the day of 3lb 11oz was caught by 17 year old Jess Tweddle in her first ladies national having already represented the youth team on two occasions. The top 8 anglers all qualify to fish in the England Ladies team that will fish the Home International at Llyn Clywedog next June. The full list of anglers to qualify is:

Lianne Frost, Sheena Goode, Sam Edmunds, Jess Tweddle, Philippa Hake, Rosemary Gunn, Sue Kidby and Eileen Chatwin. 18 year old Natalie Bullock was 9th and qualifies to be the travelling reserve.

England Ladies team manager Chris Bobby said “We were fortunate that the weather was good for fishing on match day, some practice days had been challenging but Pitsford was fishing well and most competitors had found tactics that would work. I kept a keen eye on the boats throughout the event and it was clear that we would have a really strong team regardless of who qualified. It is great to see the standard of fishing improving and we should do all we can to encourage the ladies to fish more and welcome more new members to the sport.”

“It was also great to see three youngsters in the field and even better that they all fished well. We will have to arrange next years international practice around school holidays which is something I never thought we would have to worry about! Many thanks to Anglian Water for hosting this excellent event and special thanks to Neil and Mark in the shop and the ranger Simon who looked after everyone on the day.”
