The Angling Trust British Pike Final took place once again on the 20ft River and Glassmore Bank sections of Whittlesey AA’s waters near Peterborough, on Saturday 4th November.

This unique event saw close to 200 anglers in competition to take, not only the coveted title and silverware, but a share of the prize and pools money for the winner of almost £1,200.

After a long spell of almost perfect weather conditions, competitors were greeted by driving, heavy rain. The awful conditions were reflected by the absence of sport in some areas, however the drains also threw up some real gems.

The talk at the Manor Leisure headquarters was of the Glassmore Bank sections that had once again been in good recent form. Some good doubles were taken early in the match from the area with David Cantrell and Mick Garner scoring with samples of 15-0-0 and 14-4-0 respectively.

Another highlight on the ‘bank’ was a 6-0-0 snapper taken by local evergreen lady piker Joan Cole, who was rewarded with the ladies title.

Although it was a difficult day for many, the drains at Whittlesey continually seem to produce a surprise specimen for someone. This year that someone was Pike Final stalwart Bob Goodwin, from Stony Stratford, who fooled a superb 25-8-0 specimen, which was more than enough to take the title.

Unfortunately, none of the three junior anglers in the final this year connected with a fish so a name had to be drawn on the day. Fifteen year-old Thomas Moore from Peterborough was the first name out of the hat and took the spoils accordingly.

Our thanks must go to all of the local organisers for hosting the qualifiers, the Middle Level Commissioners together and Whittlesey Angling Club who both made an excellent job of ensuring the pegs were fishable on the day.

Furthermore our sincerest thanks to Ann and Ted Rowe who are stepping down as organisers for the final. They have been involved with the running of all aspects of the finals for almost 30 years and their joint involvement will be missed by many.

The search for new organisers and venues for the Pike Final has already begun and interested parties should contact Sandra Johnson on Sandra.Johnson@anglingtrust.net or on 0115 8224519.
