SPECIMEN AWARDS SCHEME 2017

The Angling Trust has released the results of the 2017 Specimen Award Scheme. This year the scheme received 1046 entries from 41 clubs and individual members of the Angling Trust, a 25% increase on 2016.

The club with the most entries this year were the Specimen Hunters Angling Group from Sussex, who entered a total of 170 fish, who retain the “Sea angling News” trophy for the club with the most entries. Second was Castaways SAC with 157, and third was Rodbenders SAC with 140.

The top specimen fish was a Turbot of 11lbs 6ozs caught by Andrew Webb of the Rodbenders SAC, caught from the Shore at Burton Bradstock, which was 379.17% for fish caught from that area. The ten top are as follows:

1. Turbot of 11lbs 6ozs, caught by Andrew Webb of Rodbenders SAC, from the shore at Burton Bradstock – 379.17%

2. Gilthead Bream of 12lbs 3ozs caught by Robert Wheaton of Rodbenders SAC, from the shore at Kingsbridge, Devon – 348.21%

3. Pollack of 12lbs 6ozs, caught by Mark Hayman of Rodbenders SAC, from a boat near Stoke Point, South Devon – 330.83%

4. Gilthead Bream of 5lbs 15ozs, caught by Richard Cooper an Individual member of the Angling Trust, from a boat in the Lymington River – 296.88%

5. Greater Weever of 1lb 7ozs, caught by Rob Perry of the Specimen hunters Angling Group, from boat off Eastbourne – 287.50%

6. Pollack of 9lbs 14ozs, caught by tom Travers of Honiton SAC, from the shore at Seaton – 246.88%

7. Spur Dog of 17lbs 7ozs, caught by Gary Hillon of Castaways SAC, from the shore at Salcombe – 218.36%

8. Blonde Ray of 21lbs 10ozs, caught by Darren Bell of Honiton SAC, from the shore at Minehead – 216.25%

9. Spur Dog of 21lbs 10ozs, caught by Tony Swain of Rodbenders SAC, from a boat off Plymouth – 216.25%

10. Pollack of 10lbs 6ozs, caught by Terry Hartnell of Honiton SAC, from the shore at Kerry, Ireland – 207.50%

There were 109 Gold, 250 silver and 687 Bronze certificates awarded but only 3 Juniors entered into the scheme, something the Angling Trust would like to increase for 2018.

If you think that you can catch a Specimen fish from either the shore or a boat, the scheme is open to all members of a club which is affiliated to the Angling Trust, or an Individual Member of the Angling Trust. The scheme runs from the 1st December each year, and all the information concerning the running of the scheme and the weights for each fish in each area can be found on the Angling Trust website, under Sea Angling competitions.
