Parker and Lunt take honors on Newry Canal

The fifth round of Angling Trust and Canal and River Trust Canal Pairs Championship saw the Newry Canal host the Irish leg of the contest. Set in the heart of city of Newry and on the edge of the picturesque Carlingford Lough, pairs were treated to both exceptional surroundings and fishing.

The forecast for the day was not great, but this didn't deter the crowd gathered on the Middle Bank at 9.00am, who were all up for the challenge.

All the talk pre-match was of the big hybrids that had been showing over the last number of weeks, and the consensus was that these fish may well be crucial. The all in was called at 11.30am and the battle commenced. Everyone was into fish from the off, but it was noticeable that the stamp was not very big. A few bigger stamp roach and hybrids were coming to the end pegs, but generally the stamp was a little smaller than usual.

After about an hour the predicted rain arrived and put a bit of a dampener on proceedings. There were still fish being caught all along the stretch, but the large numbers of bigger fish were still conspicuous by their absence. Most anglers were fishing two lines on the pole, one at around 6 metres and another between 11.5m and 13m. As well as poles, there were a few feeder rods in action, with most on the tip chucking to the far side of Canal about 25 yards from where they were sat.

All out was called at 4.30pm sharp, and the scales arrived. In A section Kevin Maguire was top weight placing 5.800kg on the scales for a section win, Jim Reilly on the end peg weighed in 4.240kg for a section second, with Karl Woodhouse weighing in 4.100kg for third.

In the other section Carl Parker was top weight with 6.740kg, Matt Crowl was next with 6.200kg for second and Rory O'Neill had 5.400kg for third.

Overall Pairs:

1. J.Lunt & C. Parker

2. K.Maguire & M.Wilson

3. K.Woodhouse & S.Wright

4. R.Caplice & R.O'Neill

5. G.Quinn & M.Crowl

One unique aspect of the event was the husband and wife pairing of Dave and Florence Kearney, who travelled the whole way from Boyle in County Rosscommon to participate unfortunately on this occasion they didn't manage to qualify, but we hope to see them again soon.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made this possible. Canal & River Trust and Angling Trust for all their help in staging the event.
