The South West’s first major event in 2018 attracted 82 anglers to the South Hams to fish the annual Angling Trust Wyvern Open Festival. The weather was not good with a strong NE wind and a lively sea for the five hour event.

Whiting were caught during the event, in fact the only other species caught were a single Pouting and one Dogfish. The results were announced within half an hour of the close of scales at 6.45pm at the Festival Headquarters at the Church House Inn at Stokenham.

The main sponsor was Julian Shambrook of Anyfish Anywhere Ltd, a major fishing tackle manufacturer, based in Torquay. All our sponsors for the day were thanked for their continuing support each year. Thanks were also extended to the Church House Inn for their hospitality.

The worthy winner was Ben Bradstock (Honiton SAC) who recorded a near specimen Whiting of 1.46lb (97.3%). He was presented with the top prize of £200 cash and the Brixham Bowl.

The other tackle prizes were valued at over £800 and were awarded down to 12th place, these were announced by the Chairman of the Wyvern Region Alex Parker, and Julian Shambrook of “Anyfish Anywhere” presented the prizes.

All fish brought to the scales were returned or used for the table. The Region promotes the Angling Trust “Take Five” anti litter campaign and encourages all anglers to leave the beaches cleaner than they found them.

The 39th Small Boat Festival was held in Salcombe with 76 competitors in 29 boats from all parts of the South of England, including many entries from South Wales.

The favourable weather ensured a larger entry than last year and the boats on the Saturday were able to travel to the outer area and the ray pits. It was no surprise that some good quality rays were weighed in and these featured in the prizes.

On the Sunday, as a precaution of the forecasted stronger winds, the boats were restricted to the Zone 2. Nevertheless, as always this did not deter the anglers or the fish and again some very good specimens were brought to the scales.

Alex Parker chairman of the AT Wyvern Region, thanked the generous sponsor Chris Mills, himself a competitor for many years, who presented the trophies and prizes valued over £2,500. He also thanked all the other sponsors who had helped complete the prize table. The prize giving was hosted by the Island Street Bar and Grill to whom the organising committee are very grateful.

Next year will be the 40th year of the Festival and the date will be announced as soon as available.

A donation will be made from the proceeds to the Salcombe RNLI as has been the custom since the Festival was started 39 years ago and any funds raised will go towards the work of the Angling Trust Wyvern Region on behalf of all sea anglers.

Junior Angling Festival 2017

Report by Brian Dennis

Early arrivals for the event were greeted with sunshine and blue skies but clusters of black clouds began to appear driven by a brisk westerly wind suggesting that the prospect of a shower could not be entirely discounted. In the event, however, the day remained dry throughout.

The registration officer became increasingly busy as the start time approached and with additions later in the afternoon, 56 young anglers were signed on, the highest achieved for this event.

Junior members of Castaways, D.O.E., Rodbenders and Stonehouse represented Plymouth clubs with welcome visitors from Honiton, West Bay and Lyme Regis.

However, there were a surprisingly large number of youngsters who were unattached, 32 in total, some of who were to have their first fishing experience. Others showed during the course of the day that they were competent young anglers and it seems that local clubs probably missed an ideal recruitment opportunity.

The wind/tide combination presented some difficulties for those float fishing on the seaward side of the pier in particular but nevertheless the general enthusiasm was plain to see.

Disappointingly, catches on the day were significantly less than in previous years.  Garfish, one of the favourite target species, were entirely absent whilst mackerel too were elusive with only three being caught.

Numbers of small wrasse and pollack were brought to the scales but only nine of the former and two of the latter fulfilled the minimum length requirement.

Ayden Rawlins (Lyme Regis) and Brealand Wilson (unattached) caught two of the weighable wrasse, 15.5oz and 1lb 5.25oz. respectively.

However, by far the best catch of the day was the thick lipped grey mullet of 3lb 3 oz hooked by another of the unattached youngsters, seven-year old Josh Johnson.

Alex Parker, speaking on behalf both the Wyvern Region of the Angling Trust and the Plymouth Federation of SACs, thanked everyone who had attended and hoped all had had an enjoyable day. He also thanked the local tackle dealers who had sponsored the event so generously. David and Simon Kingdom at Osborne & Craig who had supplied the major prizes, Tom Worthy at Plymouth Angling Centre, Tony and Matt at South West Sea Baits, Martin Beer at Tatler Tackle and Rob Hobbs at Rob’s Tackle and Bait who had provided the “goody bags”.

He also expressed his appreciation for the prizes supplied by Kiddy Wholesale Ltd. of Torquay, to local anglers Ernie Beeney (D.O.E. SAC) and Paul Green (Plymouth SAC) each of who had also made contributions and to the R.N.L.I., Brixham for providing badges and safety advice items.

Andy Rye, Chairman of the Plymouth Federation, subsequently made the presentations and the full details are as follows:

Winner, Under 12 (with no major prize)
Ayden Rawlins (Lyme Regis)

Runner Up, Under 12

Winners of the Team Competition

Rod/reel combos were also awarded to the four other youngest entrants
Ellis Wilson (3), Albert Mills (3) (not shown), Alfie Gardener (4) and George Eaton (4)

The day was ended when the competitors gathered together and collectively expressed their thanks to all the event sponsors with a mass “Mount Batten Wave”, a resounding cheer accompanied by a vigorous waving and shaking of their goody bags!

Angling Trust Wyvern Region Open Shore,
Slapton, South Devon, on 8th January 2017

The South West’s first major event in 2017 attracted 128 anglers to the South Hams to fish the annual Angling Trust Wyvern Open Festival at the popular venue on Slapton Beach.

The weather was good with a light offshore wind but the calm conditions resulted in fewer fish than normal being brought to the scales.

However Slapton rarely disappoints and produced some very good fish, including a dab of 1.390 lbs which equated to specimen weight of 139%: a Thornback ray of 11.865lbs or 118.65%; a Spotted Ray of 4.525.lbs or 90.30% and good quality Dogfish and Mackerel caught during daylight and Whiting as usual in the last two hours.  The results were announced within half an hour of the close of scales at 6.45 pm at the Festival Headquarters at the Church House Inn at Stokenham.

The main sponsor was Julian Shambrook of Anyfish Anywhere Ltd, a major fishing tackle manufacturer, based in Torquay and Tom Worthy of Plymouth Angling and these were thanked for their continued support as were the competitors many of who had travelled from Watchet, Bristol, Weymouth and beyond.  Any money raised, less expenses, from the event will be invested in the work of the Region on behalf of sea all anglers. Thanks were also extended to the Church House Inn for their hospitality.

The worthy winner was local unattached angler John Pollard from Plymouth with a combination of a Lesser Spotted Dogfish and a Dab to total 194.50 % points. He was presented with the top prize of £200 cash and the Brixham Bowl.

The other tackle prizes were valued at over £800 and were awarded down to 13th place, these were announced by the Chairman of the Wyvern Region Alex Parker and Julian Shambrook of Anyfish Anywhere presented the prizes.  All fish brought to the scales were returned or used for the table.

The Division promotes the Angling Trust “Take Five” anti litter campaign and encourage all anglers to leave the beaches cleaner than they found them.

The organisers are grateful to the local fisherman who once again, removed his pots seaward to prevent any inconvenience or conflict with the anglers. This cooperation between the fishing sectors bodes well for the future as increasing pressure is brought to bear on all interests within the inshore fisheries.

The Angling Trust Wyvern Region held the 38th National Small Boats Angling Championship in Salcombe, South Devon, on 24th and 25th of September. The strong winds restricted the boats inside the bar on the Saturday but Sunday saw the fishing limits opened up nearly to zone 2.

Nearly 60 competitors in 23 boats from all parts of the South West, including a large entry from South Wales, took part and some very good fish from a variety of species were brought to the scales on both days.

The main sponsor, John Grandshaw of JG Technologies Ltd., Weymouth, presented the trophies and prizes which valued over £2,500. In his short speech he expressed his wish to help boat owners choose the best Marine Electronics available via his company’s web site.

David Rowe, on behalf of the Angling Trust Wyvern, thanked him for his support and all the other main sponsors who had helped us towards the prize table. The prize giving was hosted by the Island Street Bar and Grill to whom the organising committee are very grateful.

Angling Trust Wyvern Region Open Shore Competition
Slapton, South Devon, on 10th January 2016

After weeks of rough weather an improving forecast late in the week attracted 163 anglers, the largest entry in recent years to fish the annual Angling Trust Wyvern Open Shore Festival, at the popular South Hams Beach of Slapton.

As expected following the storms, there were good catches of dogfish during daylight and whiting in the last two hours and this made it a busy task for the organisers at the weigh in. The main results were announced within an hour of the close of scales at 7.15 at the Festival Headquarters at the Church House Inn at Stokenham.

David Rowe on behalf of the organisers thanked the main sponsor Anyfish Anywhere Ltd., a major fishing tackle manufacturer based in Torquay, for their continued support, also the competitors many of who had travelled from Bristol, Weymouth and beyond. Any money raised, less expenses, from the event will be ploughed back into the work of the Region on behalf of aa sea anglers. PLYMOUTH FEDERATION OF SEA ANGLING CLUBS AND INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS
WITH
THE WYVERN REGION OF THE ANGLING TRUST
JUNIOR ANGLING FESTIVAL 2014

A party of young anglers from the West Bay SAC in Dorset joined others from Honiton and the local area to compete in this event organised jointly by the Plymouth Federation of Sea Angling Clubs and Individual Members and the Wyvern Region of the Angling Trust. The total entry was 33 and all had to contend with a brisk South Westerly breeze that blew throughout the afternoon.

Expectations rose when, shortly before the start time at two o’clock, Mackerel were seen shoaling just a few yards either side of the far end of the pier but then either moved away or showed no interest in the many float fished baits that were offered.

Garfish too were also noticeable by their absence although one was unfortunately lost as its captor sought to lift it up the side of the pier. 9 of the 10 fish that were subsequently recorded having met the minimum size limits were Ballen Wrasse and for a lengthy period, a 1 lb. 9 ¼ fish caught by one of the youngest competitors, 5-year-old Evie Gallagher (Rodbenders SAC), seemed destined to win the competition.

However, 14 year old Jasmine Nicholson, another Rodbenders member who was also amongst the prize winners in 2013, eclipsed Evie’s capture late on with a specimen of 3 lb. 5 oz.

AT Wyvern Champs Jasmine Nicholson

As  well as the shield, Jasmine won a Ron Thompson Diablo spinning  with a reel and line provided by Simon and David Kingdom of Osborn & Cragg Fishing Tackle Shop.

AT Wyvern Champs Evie Gallagher

At first, Evie had mixed feelings over her catch ‘cause it was wet and slippery and wriggly  …………….but had a change of heart at the end of the afternoon when she received her reward!

AT Wyvern Champs Evie Gallagher and trophy

The most unusual catch was by another visitor from West Bay, Ollie Mears, who caught a Topknot weighing just 77 grams, a strange looking flatfish that only grows to about 25 cms in length, which established a new record for his club and possibly a new Wyvern shore record for the species. .

Grateful thanks are expressed to Mrs. Jo Hyde, representing the Angling Trust, for presenting the prizes, to the main sponsors Simon and David Kingdom of Osborne & Cragg for providing the Ron Thompson Rods and reel combinations as well as the “goody bags” of small tackle items that were given to all competitors, to South West Sea Baits and others for a donating a variety of other prize items and to all who helped out on the day.

The Angling Trust Wyvern Region helped by the Brixham SAC held a open meeting last night at the Brixham SAC club house in Castor Road. Some thirty sea anglers from across Devon turned up to listen to Cefas and Devon and Severn IFCAS talk on the 2012 Sea Angling Survey.

Kieran Hyder from Cefas spoke briefly about how the 2012 survey was conducted and giving an overview of how many people went sea fishing along with how many times on average they went boat and shore fishing. Lastly the value in money was discussed along with how many jobs sea angling support in the country.

This was followed by an interesting talk from Libby Ross who is the senior inshore fisheries officer for Devon and Severn IFCAS. Libby spoke briefly on her roles in the survey and how she is currently working on the North coast of Devon and Somerset at the moment. Lastly Libby reinforced strongly that the Devon and Severn IFCAS are looking at all forms of fishing differently now, because they have to, and SEA ANGLING is a valuable sport that should be listened to and supported around the Devon and Severn area and wider afield.

A look back at the 35th National Small Boat Angling Championships

Small Boat open competition winner 2013

Winner - Justin Weeks receiving his presentation awards from Francis Wills

The 35th Small Boats Festival was held in torrential rain with gusting easterly winds on the first day which resulted in the boats being restricted to within the bar and estuary, but despite this some good fish were caught with Trigger Fish, Thornback Ray, Mullet and Wrasse being the main species brought to the scales. The weather on the second day improved slightly with less rain, but, on the advice of the Festival Commodore, Chris Winzor, the Salcombe Lifeboat Coxswain, the boats were again restricted to the harbour, but as on the first day, some good fish were caught.

The results were out by 6 pm and the Trophies and prizes were presented by the Festivals Patron Francis Wills of Bonwitco Boats Kingsbridge at the premises of the Boat Crew, Salcombe which went smoothly.

The organisers, The Angling Trust’s Wyvern Region are very grateful for the support of the Main Sponsors, The Boat Crew, Salcombe, Lowerance Marine Electronics, part of the Navico Group, Bonwitco Boats and Wills Marine of Kingsbridge who supplied the Stewards Boat. The other supporters were, Torbay Angling Centre, Plymouth Angling, In addition, the Salcombe Harbour Office of the South Hams District Council and the RNLI assisted in ensuring the event was a success..

Prior to the presentations by Francis Wills, David Rowe, on behalf of the organisers, thanked Mr and Mrs Rob Hales of the Boatcrew for their kind help at short notice and the competitors who despite the weather had supported the Festival. He explained that the Division was committed to the long running and popular Festival, but its future rested with the competitors who he urged to complete the circulated survey. He confirmed that donations would be made to the RNLI and Young Salcombe Centre. The prizes in total were valued at over £2,000

REPORTS

Angling Trophy 2013

Honiton SAC presentation Night

Friday 8th March 2013 saw the Honiton Sea Angling Club presentation night at the Hare and Hounds public House take place with 70 members and their guests attending the function.

The evening started with a superb Carvery put on by the staff at the Hare and Hounds. Before the presentation started, club Chairman Dennis Retter welcomed all to the function and reported that the club was now starting into it's 20th year and another very good year had been seen with plenty of good fish and results being achieved. Two of the more prominent achievements being that the club had come in at second place in the country with recording specimen fish with the the national body the Angling Trust. The seventy members had recorded well over 100 specimen fish. The winning club turned out to be Paignton SAA from South Devon. The other prominent thing was that two members of the club featured in the England field casting team, Chairman Dennis Retter again captained the two teams and also getting into the England B team was Berry Trevett. Barry was picked for team B and actually came away from the world championships in 12th place, some achievement indeed and Barry's best cast to date is just short of 300 yards!

On the night some 80 awards were made to all the winners. The picture by Mike Spiller shows the main trophy winners with some of their awards.
