Fish Need Homes Too

Environmental Campaigning:

Restore Fish Stocks | Fish Need Homes Too | Stop Polluting Our Rivers | Stop Stealing Our Water!

Fish do not just need clean and plentiful water, they also need places to hide from predators, to rest, to spawn and to feed. Marginal and overhanging vegetation, clean gravel and backwater channels are just a few of the important features of lakes and rivers which are important to fish. Far too many lakes and ponds have been drained and lost forever, or provide no structural habitat for fish. Many of our rivers have been dredged, dammed, weired, straightened and sanitised, destroying their natural habitats. Wild waterscapes are vital for storing water, creating wildlife havens and nurturing healthy fish populations.

Barriers to fish migration affect all fish, not just salmon, sea trout and eels, but a whole host of coarse fish which need to move up and down river systems to feed, spawn and replenish damaged stocks elsewhere. In some rivers, fish get washed downstream in floods and then can.t get back upstream because of these barriers, creating a conveyor belt carrying fish into tidal reaches and away from their spawning grounds.

Often developments take place on or around rivers which damage our members. fishing by changing the flow and depth of rivers.

What we will do:
  • We will continue to put pressure on the Government and its agencies to implement the measures proposed in the Blueprint for Water (
  • We will campaign locally and nationally to ensure that water bodies achieve good ecological status as defined by the Water Framework Directive, through the Our Rivers campaign ( in partnership with Association of Rivers Trusts, WWF and the RSPB.
  • Where possible we will use the law to challenge decisions and activities which affect fish habitat on behalf of our members, and seek compensation for damage caused.
  • We will respond to consultations and influence policies which affect fish habitat to ensure that it is better protected.
  • We will lobby for funds to be released from Government for the removal of redundant structures in rivers preventing the passage of fish and the installation of fish passes where removal is not possible.
  • We will oppose hydropower applications which could cause harm to fisheries.
What we could do with more resources:
  • Take more aggressive and concerted legal action to prevent and compensate for damage to fish habitat.
  • Make more detailed responses to consultations and use science to influence Government policy.
  • Appoint more experts to analyse the problems caused by barriers to migration and other damage to habitat.
  • Appoint local representatives who could campaign on behalf of anglers to remove particular structures and for river restoration.
