Fishing for Life: A national strategy for getting people fishing

In 2012, Defra and the Environment Agency commissioned the Angling Trust to compile a national strategy for the future of angling participation.  Fishing for Life aims to find ways of overcoming barriers to increasing the number and diversity of anglers and maximising the benefits to society from people going fishing.

The Fishing for Life strategy identifies four key outcomes:
  1. We want people to take up and continue fishing so it becomes a habit for life - getting the fishing habit.
  2. We want angling to be recognised for its role in improving the nation's health, increasing educational attainment and reducing crime and anti social behaviour - transforming and changing lives.
  3. We want to improve people's lives by using angling as a catalyst for bringing people and society together - focus on people and places.
  4. We want people to recognise that fish and fishing are at the heart of a better environment - hands up for the environment.
Please download the Fishing for Life strategy documents below and share them with as many people as possible.  This strategy will form the basis for all our future work in this area and we will be working with as many other organisations as possible to implement planned projects to protect and improve fishing... for life.

Please Note: Fishing For Life is the title of this report, but it should not be confused with the excellent charity called South West Fishing For Life (more details HERE).  This organisation is an important contributor to delivery of the strategy, and very supportive of it, but it is a separate and independent organisation.

Research Surveys
As part of this work, the Angling Trust commissioned social research co-operative Substance ( to conduct two major surveys of angling in England and Wales.

The National Angling Survey was the largest survey of anglers yet undertaken, with over 29,000 respondents - a truly tremendous turnout.  The survey aimed to find out about anglers' participation, how this might be increased and their views about the role of the EA, the Rod Licence and the future of sea angling. We also conducted a longer survey of 785 angling organisations about the future of the sport.  The survey report, and all the data that were gathered, are available for download on this page.
