Shires sneaks into Fish'O'Mania final

Shires FOM press release

The majestic Partridge Lakes was the host of the nineteenth round of Fish’O’Mania XXV and the sun shone on the 126 anglers who made their way to the Warrington hotspot. With opportunities running out for hopefuls, there was an excited buzz at the draw and the coveted lakes were; Willows, Covey 5 and Covey 6.

With both high pressure and air temperatures, the F1s and carp were in a bit of a cagey mood early doors. A lot of anglers picked the odd fish off their far bank margins, whilst priming a shallow swim with either maggots, or casters. It was certainly this shallow line which proved vitally important to overall winner and qualifier for the final, Dave Shires.

Dave drew on peg 167, on Covey 6 and went about extracting the most he could from the moody F1s he had in front of him. Maggots, maggots and more maggots was Daves approach, with which he got the F1’s feeding shallow at 8-9 meters. Dave caught his F1s and carp to 3lb in spells, ending up down the margin on maggot for a few later fish. At the scales Dave had an anxious wait, but eventually booked his place in the final with 142lb 9ozs, just 7ozs clear of the chasing pack!

The agonisingly close runner up, was Andrew Hodge, from Croston. Andy drew on peg 103, on Convey 5 and amassed an unbelievable 142lb 2ozs! Fishing a contrasting match to Dave, Andy focused on his far side mudline with pellets and then down his margin with groundbait to take F1s and carp to 3lb.

Finishing up the closest qualifier this year was Dave Brown Junior, fishing under the Browning Crowsport banner. Dave also broke the 140lb barrier, with 141lb 4ozs and was also just the one fish away from qualification! Casters shallow were Dave’s tactics and he remarked that he ‘lost around ten fish which cost him the match’.

Our thanks must go to amazing Barbara Ikin and her team at Partridge Lakes for a very well covered qualifier. Mike Storey must also receive praise for dealing with the swathes of anglers turning up on the day, who all got a peg. Anglers are reminded that opportunities are running out to get into the final and that tickets can be purchased HERE.
