Voluntary Bailiff Service Vacancies in South Downs (Sussex) Area

The Voluntary Bailiff Service logo - small

The Voluntary Bailiff Service (VBS) currently remains an operational pilot project in South East England. At Phase 1, Volunteer Bailiffs (VB) contribute heavily to the intelligence-led enforcement system, acting as 'eyes and ears', patrolling with fellow VBs and, on occasions, with Environment Agency (EA) Fisheries enforcement Officers and the police.

Training is provided by the Angling Trust, EA and National Wildlife Crime Unit; VBs are provided with a reference handbook, pocket notebook and identity card, and work closely with their VBS Area Coordinator and local EA Lead, to support professional fisheries enforcement officers. Incidents in progress are reported via the EA 24 hour incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60, or to the police if appropriate.

Weekly patrol reports are submitted, and communication maintained, via the VBS secure website. It is likely that selected VBs will be elevated to Phase 2 later this year, in which volunteers will receive exactly the same training as Agency staff and similarly empowered to check rod licences and deal with certain byelaw offences. This is so that VBs can support Agency staff in rod licence checking in particular, allowing the professionals more time to deal with more serious investigative work.
