MMO Review into the Rame Head Disposal Site - Submit Your Evidence and Help Put an End to the Dumping in Whitsand Bay

27.08.10

Angling Trust is supporting the campaign to stop the dumping of contaminated sediments into the sea off Rame Head at the eastern end of Whitsand Bay in Cornwall. Now there is a chance for you to help stop this destruction.

Get involved!
Anecdotal evidence and the views of local residents, recreational users - including sea anglers - businesses and environmental groups will be accepted as part of the Marine Management Organisation's (MMO) review into the evidence allowing the licence to dump thousands of tonnes of contaminated, dredged material off Rame Head at the eastern end of Whitsand Bay in Cornwall.

This is the first time the views and experiences of those that know the area have been taken into account and it is a unique opportunity for sea anglers to contribute your local knowledge, photos and any other anecdotal evidence about how the dumping has impacted negatively on your sea angling experience, and the marine environment around Whitsand Bay.

The review is being overseen by the independent chair of the MMO, Chris Parry, and the organisation's chief scientific advisor who will be re-evaluating the data and context on which the original licensing decision was made by the Marine and Fisheries Agency.

More Evidence needed:
In addition to anecdotal evidence more detailed evidence will play a major part in the review and must:

  • Be photographic, scientific or the results of analysis undertaken on physical samples.
  • Be accurately labelled and documented and specify time, date and location.
  • Have validated and verifiable proof that images, material or samples were taken from the site itself or, if relevant, an associated location, before analysis.
  • Be part of a sufficiently large sample to have allowed proper, significant testing, validation and assessment to have taken place.
  • Have been stored within a tamper-proof, sealed and certified container to avoid contamination or third-party interference. All sampling and analysis should preferably have been done in accordance with the guidelines set down in the UK Clean Seas Environmental Monitoring Programme Green Book, to avoid any cross contamination.
  • Be taken from properly certified academic reports and technical studies.

How to submit your evidence:
  • By post to:
    Rame Head review
    PO Box 1275
    Newcastle Upon Tyne
    NE99 5BN
  • By phone via the MMO enquiry line on 0300 123 1032.
Spread the Word:
Know other anglers who have evidence they would like to submit? Make sure you pass on the details so they can submit their evidence to the MMO.

In addition to the review Fish Legal, the legal arm of the Angling Trust, is looking into the evidence on which the licences to dump were granted. We will keep you updated on any developments.
