Angling Trust Bait Summit Brings Heads Together

Bait Summit Panel 2013

The government’s change of approach to managing European marine sites and the responsibilities of the new IFCAs have forced bait collection into the spotlight in recent months with a series of IFCA bylaws being introduced that will restrict bait digging on conservation grounds.

The summit, held on September 24th at Fishmongers' Hall in London, brought together sea anglers, IFCA representatives (including sea anglers), conservation managers, environmental groups and scientists to hear presentations and discuss key questions in a series of workshop sessions.

The presentations and outcomes from these discussions can be found on the Angling Trust website HERE and these will form the basis of the Angling Trust’s policy on bait collection which will be developed over the coming months.

The Angling Trust's Marine Campaigns Manager, David Mitchell, said, "Bait collection has been forced into the limelight in recent months. we are really pleased that the Angling Trust has been the organisation to take the lead in bringing all the interested parties together to review the most recent evidence and discuss ways forward on how conservation concerns can be addressed while bait collection is maintained. The Angling Trust's objective is to get more people fishing more often - a sustainable supply of bait is essential if we are too achieve this."

The presentations and outputs from the summit can be found HERE
