For some time, the Angling Trust enforcement team has been working with Nottinghamshire Police to improve the force's service to anglers and appreciation of angling issues - in particular that fishing without permission and the theft of fish are criminal offences to which the police have a clear responsibility.

Nottinghamshire Police has demonstrated support of the Fisheries Enforcement Campaign and a commitment to improving its service to anglers by appointing Special Constable Haddon Smith in a liaison role.

Haddon said: "The role is similar to that of a Wildlife Crime Officer, where I act as a point of contact with anglers and water bailiffs in the Sherwood area. I will be going on patrol with them around the sites and locations they are responsible for. Because I am able to do name, vehicle and other checks on the spot, we can determine there and then whether everything is in order; if not, then I can arrest, report offenders for summons and seize evidence. This new role and working relationship will help us work more closely with anglers and the public, whose concerns and issues Nottinghamshire Police takes seriously. Anyone wishing to contact me should call 101."

Dale Whittaker, Secretary of Angling Trust member club, Nottingham Piscatorial Society, said: "We have worked closely with the Angling Trust and Nottinghamshire Police to resolve certain issues and very much welcome Haddon's appointment. This can only help communication and mutual understanding, and we very much welcome and applaud this initiative."

Angling Trust National Enforcement Manager, Dilip Sarkar MBE, said: "This is further clear evidence that the police are increasingly understanding of our issues and responding positively to anglers' concerns. We look forward to working with Special Constable Smith and supporting him howsoever we are able. Remember though, that incidents in progress must not be reported to Haddon but via force control room in the normal way, by 101 or, if necessary, 999."
