The early morning rain did little to put off participants from across Northamptonshire as they descended on Barnwell Country Park to take part in the East Midlands Family Fishing Event. Over 100 people took the opportunity to visit the free event and find out what angling was all about.

Whilst many of the participants were new to the sport, a large number were looking to rediscover their interest in the sport from when they were young, now looking for an activity to do with their young family.

The day provided the opportunity to receive a basic introduction to the sport as well as trying various different angling approaches such as fly casting, fly tying, feeder fishing and river fishing. After receiving some basic guidance, families had the opportunity to barrow a basic set of equipment and go off and fish on their own, which proved very popular. Lots of small rudd, roach and perch were caught leaving participants with a smile on their face.

James Roche, Angling Trust Regional Officer commented; "It was great to see such an appetite from new participants to get involved in angling. It was also great to see so many people coming back to the sport, looking to take up the sport with their new family. The Family Fishing initiative is all about providing a platform to get involved in angling , discovering how easy it is and where local opportunities exist, and I'm sure we achieved this at Barnwell".

The event could not have happened without the support of Northamptonshire County Council and the team of volunteers and angling coaches that helped pull the event together.

There are a number of opportunities coming up across Northamptonshire if you would like to get involved in angling. For information on your local angling opportunities visit www.facebook.com/jamesrocheat
