Angling Trust supports Government proposals to ban microbeads

The Angling Trust has backed a ban on the use of plastic microbeads in cosmetics and personal care products in the UK. The tiny plastic beads used in shower gels, face scrubs, toothpastes and other products are washed down the drain and being too small to be removed in the water treatment process end up being washed out to sea where they absorb toxic chemicals, enter the food chain and accumulate in fish and other marine organisms.

Defra are currently consulting on a ban on their use in the UK which the Angling Trust has supported. David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine said, “Sea angers who enjoy a tasty meal from their catch will be horrified to learn that the fish we eat are being contaminated with microscopic particles of plastic. The banning of microbeads in cosmetics is a small but important step in beginning to reduce the amount of manmade litter entering the marine environment and in particular, the fish we eat.

The Angling Trust has called for the government to go further and move towards banning the use of microbeads in a range of other sources that are responsible for the majority of microplastics entering the marine environment, including synthetic tiles, paints and ropes.

Anglers and angling organisations can support the proposals to ban microbeads from cosmetics by responding to the consultation HERE, which closes on February 28th.

The Angling Trust is already involved in reducing litter through its Just Take 5 and Tidy Anglers campaigns.
