06.07.18  Is the government about to miss the opportunity to deliver a better deal for sea anglers? The publication of the government’s long awaited, and extensively leaked, Fisheries White Paper -  Sustainable fisheries for future generations - has met with a largely lukewarm response from organisations representing the UK’s 800,000 recreational sea anglers. Despite claiming to want to move towards ‘a fairer share of fishing opportunities’ and to ‘improve the sustainability of the fishing industry …. while protecting our precious marine environment’ the White Paper rules out any serious reforms to the existing system of quota allocation thereby underlining the disproportionate influence that that the larger commercial fishing organisations have had on the process.

Surrey Police has become the latest force to sign up to Operation TRAVERSE – the multi-agency initiative launched four years ago to tackle fish theft and illegal fishing.

29.06.18  Bass Bag Limit Hopes Confirmed As Estimates of Recreational Removals Are Slashed

Hopes of re-establishing a bag limit for bass this year took a leap forward today when revised scientific advice was published estimating a whopping 87 per cent decrease in the estimated impact of recreational fishing in 2016 compared to the figures published last year.

Scientists are now estimating recreational removals from 2016 were only 212t compared to 1627t estimated last year which lead to a ban on keeping any recreationally-caught bass at all in 2018.

Anglers in South Wales have welcomed the UK government’s decision not to provide financial support for the proposed tidal lagoon in Swansea Bay that would have risked serious harm to marine and migratory fish populations, and other aquatic wildlife.

21.06.18  Fisheries workshop draws up action plan to manage otter predation

The Angling Trust and the Institute of Fisheries Management held a workshop at Barston Lakes in the Midlands for academics, Defra, the Environment Agency and fisheries and angling groups to assess the impacts of growing numbers of otters on fisheries and to identify actions to minimise them.
