On Wednesday 9th April a team of eight volunteers from the Angling Trust and Fish Legal office in Leominster gathered at Skenfrith on the river Monnow, to help with the latest stage in the Wye and Usk Foundation’s project, led by WUF trustee Tony Norman, to de-litter the whole of the Wye catchment.

Rob Denney of the Monnow Rivers Association co-ordinated the day’s efforts, and four local volunteers also turned out to lend a hand.

corrosive bottle41 sacks of rubbish were collected from approximately five miles of riverbank. Much of the litter was recovered from the branches and roots of trees, where it had been caught up in the winter floods. The spoils included a washing up bowl, a large corrosive chemical container (pictured right), plastic buckets and a road sign, although the vast majority of litter recovered was plastic originating from silage wrapping and farm feed bags.

The team was blessed with one of the finest days of the year so far and the spring sunshine in the stunning Monnow valley made the task a pleasure rather than a chore.

Overall, the Wye and Usk Foundation’s initiative over the past three years has seen more than 3,000 bags of litter removed from its banks, the vast majority of which has come from farms.

Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust and Fish Legal said: “Hundreds of anglers and other volunteers have come from miles around to remove unsightly and hazardous litter from the banks of this wonderful river.  It is sad that some people dump their rubbish in such a beautiful place and we urge farmers to be more careful with plastic silage wrap and in particular with drums of chemicals. Even tiny amounts of pesticides in rivers can decimate the insect life on which most fish depend for their food.”
