Anglers fishing the popular waters of the Lee Valley Park in Essex have been spared a large hike in the cost of on site parking thanks to interventions by the Angling Trust and local MP Charles Walker.

Lee Valley Park contains 27 gravel pits and 21 different stretches of river and flood relief channel and is famous for producing specimen carp, bream and tench along with huge chub, barbel and perch from the Lee.

Around half the fisheries are licensed to various angling clubs and syndicates with remaining 15 run directly by the park authority who charge anglers both day tickets and seasonal permits fees ranging from £65 to £310 plus a key charge.

A proposed new parking scheme aimed at all park users would have seen anglers paying an additional £50 a year for parking alone. This prompted protests from anglers who felt that they were already making a contribution to the cost of maintaining secure car parks in their permit fees.

Broxbourne MP Charles Walker, who is also chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Angling, asked the Angling Trust to intervene with the park authorities. Last week, Lee Valley Park Chief Executive Shaun Dawson wrote back to Angling Trust Campaigns Chief Martin Salter confirming that an annual permit scheme is to be introduced with a reduced £20 charge for anglers.

This was welcomed by Mr Salter who said: “We became aware that a number of anglers who use the Lee Valley Park were concerned about the proposed increase in parking charges and we wrote to the Chief Executive to press for some recognition for anglers in the new parking structure. We are glad that the Park Authorities and the Fisheries Team have responded positively and that those fishing the park will now be spared the full cost of the hike in charges.”

Charles Walker MP added: “I want to thank the Angling Trust for getting involved and representing the interests of local anglers to help me secure to a better deal for those fishing the Lee Valley Park. The new parking regime has rightfully recognised that anglers were already paying to use the park’s facilities through the cost of their annual permit and should not have to pay an excessive supplement on top.”
