More Medals for Carp Team England

Carp team England 2018

A dominant Carp Team England continued their run of medal success with a Double bronze medal in the FIPS-ed 20th World Carp Fishing Championships in Serbia recently.

Twenty seven nations, the biggest line up ever in an international carp event, competed for the title of World Champions. Fished on Lake Ada in the middle of Belgrade, the event proved tricky due to a very low stock and low average size, but England were strong and caught early to establish themselves at the top in the 72 hour endurance event.

A larger than average fish caught by defending World Champions Ukraine overtook England to put them into first, but England hit back taking a first and second in section B and C to challenge for the top. England re-took the lead in the latter stages of the match and were looking at taking gold as there was a four-way tie on position places with Ukraine, Croatia, USA and England all scoring a 1-2-max but England had a superior weight and fish count. However, in the dying stages Portugal, a team who had blanked throughout the match, caught a 3kg carp to knock England back by 1/2 a point gifting the win to Ukraine by a point scoring technicality. World No 1s Croatia took second.

Harry Charrington and Karl Pitcher put in a sterling performance to take the section win in C section and with it an individual bronze medal to add to the team bronze.

Manager Rob Hughes announced “It was a tough venue but that suits us. We formulated a plan from intel and research without having seen the venue and it worked. One section was virtually devoid of fish so there was nothing we could do but we made up for it in other areas. The lad’s performance was excellent and I’m pleased with a bronze but at the same time incredibly disappointed it wasn’t the gold it could so easily have been. No complaints from us though. The rules are the rules and we have to live with them”.

England’s result was even more impressive as the team had not practiced at the venue due to financial and technical restrictions.

Carp Team England men’s and women’s teams have had a remarkable year this year scoring two firsts and a third in the three events they have fished. The brilliant results increase their World ranking status and the men move up to 3rd in the World just 1 point off second, with the women unofficially ranked No 1.

England’s next event is the ICFA Home Nations hosted by Wales on the 2-4 November.
