During the official practice days for the Loch Style National Final held at Grafham Water, in Perry, Cambridgeshire on Saturday 14th September it came apparent that the fish were located in two areas Sanctuary Bay and Gaynes Cove, though fish were caught in other areas, they were not caught in the same numbers. Most competitors were catching on nymphs on midge tips and floaters either strait lining, or on the washing line, with lures not being as successful.

The weather was good for fishing for all the competitors over the two practice days, although the wind direction was different each day. On the day of the match the wind had increased and was again totally different, the boats at the start went to both Sanctuary Bay and Gaynes Cove with the majority heading to Gaynes.

It was quickly apparent that the fishing had changed which some anglers had found out late on Friday and the fish would respond to lure tactics. Tony Curtis got into fish quickly on his first drift pulling on a floater with a booby on the point, and a Fab on the top dropper, this knowledge led to him qualifying to fish for England next year.

Many anglers found the fishing very difficult and a lot of very well recognised anglers failed to qualify. Those who did qualify reacted to the changing conditions and fishing better than others.

The top 28 qualifiers will be representing the Angling Trust Team England Fly Fishing in the 2014 Home Internationals at Lough Owel in Ireland and Llyn Brenig in Wales.
