England Men’s Shore Angling Team landed the silver medal after a nail-biting final day at the FIPS-M World Shore Angling Championship in Wexford, Ireland.

It was a trip of many twists from all-night matches catching lots of whiting to a full daylight match on the last day fishing for flounders.

The practice day saw a steady performance from the team consisting of Bill Linfield, Ian Golds, Darren Newland, Saul Page, Richard Yates, Gareth Griffiths (reserve), and Malcolm Stote (manager) who used tactics and methods to enable them to confirm their plan of action for the Championships.

Day 1 saw the team lying in fifth spot and the following day used full-on distance casting which proved to be a winning formula on Day 2. With Bill Lindfield and Saul Page fishing consistency throughout the first three days alongside Richard Yates' zone win on day 2 and a seventh place from Darren Newland things were looking promising for Team England.

Day 3 saw the team finish in second place on the day, which put them in the lead overall going into the final day with a great chance of a medal. In the Individual stakes, Saul Page was in first place and Bill Lindfield in third.

But the last day proved extremely difficult and as the day unfolded things were not going the team’s way and they dropped down very rapidly.

Manager Malcolm Stote said: “Everyone else seemed to be catching steadily and it was devastating to watch as we lost ground everywhere but Ian and Darren both managed some last minute fish which put them up in their sections.

“It was a very nail-biting time in the results room and was too close to make any assumptions. At one stage it looked as though we had blown it and were not going to make the medals at all but we managed a tenth place on the day which kept us in the silver medal place against Ireland’s brilliant last day win.

“Unfortunately, Bill and Saul’s consistency deserted them on the last day and they dropped out of the medals. The whole week was amazing and it was great to play a small part in this great team.

“As there were 18 nations taking part the zones were very big and Gareth and I did the running trying to gather as much information as possible to pass on to the rest of the team. I would like to congratulate Team England on a hugely successful trip and our main sponsors Tronix Pro.”
