Canal Pairs press release

Report on 4th Canal Pairs Qualifier

Held on Saturday 30th July on the Aylesbury Arm, 22 pairs lined the banks. Section A was pegged near Aylesbury and B section pegged at Buckland. Due to recent dry spell, water levels were down by 10 inches or so at Buckland which had an effect on some pegs, but despite that, the venue performed well overall , going to show that the efforts of host club Tring Anglers working with the Canal & River Trusts fisheries team has paid off following the 2012 pollution event.

Individual winner on the day was Matchpacks Robert Durrant of peg A28 with 21 lbs 4 oz. with bream making up the majority of the catch. The 50 section points earned were good enough for Robert and partner Peter Durrant to claim the 5th and final qualifying spot on 87 points. Les Hills had three good bream and a few silvers in his runners up 11lb 11 oz. catch from peg B 28. Les and his partner Steve Gunner qualified for the final in 4th spot with 88 points. Steve Davis took third spot overall with his 11lb 8 oz. and with a steady performance from Phil Speakman they finished up as third qualifying pair on 90 points.

Preston Innovation Black Horse pair of Graham Smith and Lee Newson both recorded 7 lbs plus weights in what ranks as the team performance of the day. Both anglers finished third in their respective sections which secured their spot in the Penkridge final on October 29th with 96 points. Joining the other four pairs will be Tring match maestro Andy Allday and partner Dave Stoddart who compiled 94 points. Ending 6th pair is never the best place to finish as it leaves you thinking about what might have been and the lost opportunity of a precious final place. Andy Curless/Alan Donnelly and John Clegg/Bob Biddle both scored 84 points, with the latter pair having a higher overall weight. Still, there are still spaces left on all the qualifiers and a few of yesterday’s field have already decided to now book into the Milton Keynes and Basingstoke qualifiers. To book in, phone Sandra Drew on 0115 822 4519.
