England star leads the way on Soar in latest RiverFest 2016 qualifier

The River Soar near Loughborough was the venue for the latest RiverFest 2016 qualifier and it certainly didn’t disappoint with 30 of the competitors recording over 10lb.

A Zone was spread along four sections: Waterside, 1860, Greens and The Cobbles. Top weight here came off the last peg on the Greens to England international Steve Hemingray with an excellent 21-2-0 on long pole and caster. Only two anglers in this zone failed to catch more than 10lb.

B Zone was on the Deeps, the section that produced last year’s winning weight for England regular Sean Ashby. He did it again this time with a catch of 41-8-0, all bream on the long pole over groundbait with either caster or worm on the hook. Second was Shimano backed Rob Wooton with 27-14-0, beating Sam Merry by an agonising 3oz!

C Zone was held on the wilder parts of the Soar on the Osiers and Abbey. Young Welsh star Geraint Powell won from above the railway bridge with four chub and a barbel for 21-8-0. Second was five times World champion Alan Scotthorne with two big bream and perch for 19-8-0. Third was former RiverFest champion Andrew Murphy with an all dace catch of 15-9-0 on the stick and caster.
