Licensing applications or renewals during Coronavirus restrictions

Please read the latest statement from Jamie Cook at https://www.anglingtrust.net/ if you haven't already done so.

In the present circumstances, coaches who had expected to be issued with their first licence or renew an existing or lapsed one can ask for this to be deferred.

For the time being all you need to do is get in touch with Licensing Administration (ideally by email) and say that you wish to put your licence application or renewal on hold while restrictions apply to travel and public events.

  • If it's an application for your first coach licence, please give the Event Number or the venue and approximate date of the coaching course on which you took your qualification.  Please also include your forename and surname if those are not evident from your email address.
  • If it relates to renewing an existing or lapsed licence, please give your coach licence number (item 2 on your ID card) and one other reference such as your AT membership number or your postcode.
Licensing Admin will respond to your message and will then contact you when it's feasible to start getting coaches licensed and active again.

Please DON'T post anything to the Coaching Centre office, as we can't currently access our mail and it could be held at the delivery depot for some time.

Both Angling Trust offices are currently closed, but staff members are working from home and will be happy to assist.

Licensing Overview

The Angling Trust as the National Governing Body for angling is the only organisation which offers angling coaches a Licence to Practise scheme. This proves to parents, children, groups, organisations and others that you are appropriately qualified and regularly engage in training to maintain the highest possible coaching standards. It also gives them assurance that:
  • you have met the highest safeguarding standards established and supported by the NSPCC and Child Protection in Sport Unit;
  • all relevant and appropriate checks have been completed and training undertaken
To continue to support these safeguarding standards, the Angling Trust is committed to supporting and increasing numbers of those licensed. Review and restructuring of the Licence has made it more accessible and affordable, leaving it difficult to argue why a qualified coach would not want to be licensed.

Q: Who can apply to be Licensed?
A: Anyone who holds one of the following qualifications...

  • 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Angling
  • 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Angling (QCF)
  • 1st4sport Level 1 Award: Angling Support Coach (as of April 2019)
  • 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Angling
  • 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Angling (QCF)
  • 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate: Angling Lead Coach (as of April 2020)
For Learners who undertake their 1st4sport qualification through the Approved Centre of the Angling Trust, the first year's licence fee is included in the cost of their coaching course, providing that they apply within 1 month of receiving their certificate. A licence application pack is supplied when the Coaching Centre forwards a Learner's qualification certificate and completed coursework.

[Please note that coaches who pass a 1st4sport qualification through the Angling Trust's Approved Centre do NOT automatically become licensed or covered by the AT's insurance for licensed coaches by achieving L1ACA/L1AASC or L2CCA certification.  The insurance is associated with current licensed status, and it's necessary to submit an application and meet the appropriate criteria before any licence can be issued.]

Coaches whose 1st4sport qualification was awarded more than 2 months previously or undertaken through an Approved Centre other than the Angling Trust can also apply to the Angling Trust to become Licensed: the appropriate application pack can be supplied by post from the East Midlands office.

The Coach Licence to Practise also includes comprehensive Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance up to £10 million.  Currently licensed coaches are covered by the policy arranged by Angling Trust.

Licensing Categories:

There are 2 categories of Licence available:
  • All Age Groups — appropriate for coaches who work regularly with under-eighteens
  • Adults Only — for coaches who operate only with adults

Both licence categories are suitable for Level 1 or Level 2 coaches and will provide the same level of insurance cover. (However Level 1 coaches are qualified as Assistant Coaches/Angling Support Coaches and must operate under the direction of a Level 2 angling coach, whereas Level 2 coaches are qualified to coach independently.)

Cost:

  • The annual fee for coach licensing is now £35, irrespective of age, licence category or payment method.

Both licences provide the following:

  • Angling Trust Licence including administration charges and licence card
  • Insurance cover providing £10 million public liability and professional indemnity insurance
  • Individual Angling Trust Membership

The Coach Licence Agreement

I confirm that I have read the following documents:
  • The Angling Trust UK Coaching Code of Conduct (supplied to Learners on a coaching course)
  • The Angling Trust Equality Policy (supplied to Learners on a coaching course)
  • The Angling Trust Child Protection Policy Statement (supplied to Learners on a coaching course)
  • Coach Licence Terms & Conditions (supplied in licence application packs)
I agree to abide by the content of the above, and at all times to work for the betterment of the sport of angling.  I undertaken never knowingly to bring the sport into disrepute.
I undertake to comply with any additional individual or temporary conditions that may have been set on my Coach Licence.
I understand that failure to supply required information or to comply with the requirements of Coach Licensing will result in the invalidation and/or suspension of my Coach Licence and of the associated insurance.
Level 1 coaches only:
I am aware that as a Level 1 Coach I am required to operate as an Assistant Coach under the direction and in the presence of a Level 2 angling coach and that failure to comply with this will result in the invalidation and/or suspension of my Coach Licence and of the associated insurance.

Renewal of a Coach Licence:

In October 2014 the annual renewal moved from being a yearly renewal to a 3-yearly renewal, with payment of the licence fee due annually. This means less paperwork for coaches to complete and return. However we must request that any changes to contact details etc are communicated to us as and when they happen. Failure to keep any paperwork and licence requirements up to date (including First Aid, Safeguarding training and DBS check) may result in invalidation, suspension or removal of the licence.

►  Currently-licensed coaches will be sent their 3-yearly renewal forms approximately five to six weeks before the expiry date of their licence.  This should enable you as a coach to renew/validate your licence for the next three years, supplying payment of the annual licence fee by the method of your choice.

►  For coaches who haven't selected Direct Debit for payment of the annual licence fee a letter will be sent, normally ten to fourteen days before the anniversary of the last licence issue or payment due date.  When you receive an "annual payment due" letter there will be a choice of payment methods, including Direct Debit.

►   If your coach licence has expired and you haven't received renewal forms, you can download guidelines for renewing (PDF file) to see what you'll need to do.

Please note that it isn't possible to renew a coach licence online through the facility for individual (non-coach) AT membership — you will need to contact Licensing administration at the Ilkeston office.

If you renew your membership through the non-coach route without submitting your licensing form and any required evidence, you won't be covered by the specialist insurance for coaching activities, only by the non-coach membership provision for leisure angling.
