Greys Junior Bank National 2015/16

The inaugural Greys Junior Bank National Final was held at Ellerdine Fishery in Shropshire on Sunday 10th April 2016. Seventeen anglers had qualified from the nine regional heats around England took part in the event and it was Angus Cameron, aged 15 from Wimborne, who secured the title of National Bank Champion 2015/16.

The recent unsettled weather resulted in the lakes at Ellerdine colouring up and blustery conditions on the day meant that anglers were in for a testing days fishing. The match was fished to eight 30 minute sessions over rotating pegs with all fish to be returned to the water. Practice day had produced fish on most pegs however conditions deteriorated overnight and anglers faced a different challenge on the day of the main event.

A mixture of coloured lures and nymphs fished off floating or intermediate lines proved to be the most consistent and successful approach. 47 fish were caught over the course of the final giving a rod average of 2.7 fish per angler, a good effort by all considering the conditions..

Angus Cameron secured the title of National Champion with 8 fish giving him 14 points, winning a Greys GR70 rod and GX900 reel in the process while 14 year old Adam Ivison from Northumberland finished runner up as he landed 5 fish to give a score of 9 points and win a Greys GR50 rod and a GTS700 reel, Ben Evans aged 15 from Rhayader, finished in third place with 4 fish and 8 points and won a Greys GR30 rod and GTS700 reel.

Each competitor was presented with a goody bag from Greys which consisted of a tool tape, line snips, braided loops and a fly box while Ben Beckwith, Sam Thompson and Ben Fox each won a Greys GTS700 reel with the biggest rainbow of the day at 10lb 8oz, biggest Tiger Trout and best other species respectively.

Event manager Stuart Wardle said “It was a fantastic day despite the fishing being challenging it made for a real testing Final. It was also an absolute pleasure seeing these dedicated youngsters travelling from all parts of the Country to apply their skills on such a fantastic venue.

Without the support of our main sponsor Greys Fishing together with Trout Fisherman Magazine, the volunteers, helpers and parents this inaugural Junior Bank Competition would not have been such a huge success.  Thanks also to Andy Taylor who popped along with some Total Fly Fisher Goody Bags for the Finalists. It goes without saying that the support of Ed and Jayne Upton who run this fantastic fishery was absolutely superb and was integral to making this National Final such a huge success.”

Planning for the 2016/17 Greys Junior bank National is now well underway, dates for the heats will be published on the Angling Trust website around June, www.anglingtrust.net/juniorbanknational .
