Angling Trust Division 2 National Championship 2019

Date: Saturday 14th September 2019

Venue: Shropshire Union Canal

The largest Angling Trust Division 2 National Championship for years saw 43 teams (430 anglers) compete on a mediocre Shropshire Union Canal, Market Drayton between High Offley to Coole Pilate, a distance of approximately 18 miles on Saturday 14th September 2019.

As expected the winning weights would consist mostly of bream and skimmers, with the added bonus fish being perch, chub and eels. But for many it was tough going after a cold night as they were left scratching for bits, though remarkably there were no blanks.

E section at Little Soudley was the area to draw as 4 of the top 5 weights came from here. Colin Harris (Browning Northants) was crowned the Division 2 National Individual Champion after weighing an impressive 11.480k of bream and skimmers caught on double pinkie over groundbait from peg E33. At the next peg E34, Davis Gurton (East Lynx Match Squad) couldn’t quite match him, but managed to finish a clear second with 7.900k of skimmers caught on worm and caster. Tim Worsnop (Matrix Halifax) muscled D section into the top 5 with 5.690k of skimmers and perch taken on worm and maggot from peg D23.

Simon Mottram, Team Captain of Crewe MG said “We put a lot of hard work into our practice matches which we have been going on since May. On the day we were looking for early bonus fish and switched to bread bunch and then squatt and pinkie for the last two hours, which was when the roach fed the best.

As a team we are really pleased on winning the Division 2 title as it’s our local venue. We would like to dedicate our team win to Digger Conway who sadly passed away last week who was listed on our original team sheet. We would also like to thank Terry Nutt and Dave Watkins for a well organised National Championship and to all the local club waters who supported the event as well.”

The Angling Trust would like to thank local organisers Dave Watkins & Terry Nutt for their excellent work in running this event and to all the local clubs for use of their waters.

Next year the Division 2 National will take place on the Gloucester Canal on Saturday 12th September.

The Angling Trust Division Two National made its way eastwards this year to the North Bank of the River Nene at Peterborough. Despite the sterling efforts of the Peterborough & District organizing team to prepare the venue for this match, they could do nothing to entice the fish to feed. In the run up to the event practice matches had shown good form, however with some cold overnight temperatures and the increase in angling pressure, recorded weights were low for the day.

One angler not complaining though, was Simon McCormac (Nottingham AA), drawn on Peg K24 (4 below Fitzwilliam Bridge) where he fished worm and caster through a groundbait feeder to take a succession of bream up to 6lb to record a worthy winning weight of 25.210Kg and take the Division 2 Individual National Champion 2018 title.

Matrix Dynamite Trentmen captain Daniel Jones only needed five good bream to take the runner up spot with 6.950Kg from peg G24. Dan rotated between a long feeder line and lone pole line fishing worm hookbaits over groundbait to tempt the bream. Steve Allgood (Chelmsford AA) took the bronze medal with 6.600Kg from peg E25 on the boats below Millennium Bridge.

On the team front, the difficult conditions led to a very tight finish with only four points separating the top three teams. Leading the way were Sensas Mark One whose 201 points secured them the Division 2 National Championship title for 2018. Team Captain John Bates reported that practicing on the hardest sections had attuned them to the tough conditions and helped them towards their win. Just three points behind were Matrix Dynamite Trentmen with 198 points and Sensas Colemans BT took third place with 197 points.

Angling Trust Division 2 National Championship 2017

Outstanding Ossett crowned Division Two National Champions.

Division 2 Winners 2017

Top: Team Winners Browning Ossett

The Angling Trust Division Two National Championships was fished on the infamous Aire and Calder and The New Junction Canals with 250 anglers making their way from all around the country to compete for prestigious title. Competitors had to endure yet more poor weather as they were blighted with heavy downpours throughout the day. Even under these conditions the canals fished really well and delivered some spectacular canal weights and no blanks.

Division 2 Individual 2017

Picture: Individual Winner Michael Lodge

There was a large shoal of skimmers spread several pegs in J section at Rawcliffe that took four of the top five weights, but topping the pile was Browning Ossett’s Michael Lodge, who drew end peg J25 at Polllington, where he amassed 22.560Kg of skimmers, roach and bream to 4lb. Michael fished the pole at 8m to bag up on worms and casters and subsequently take the Division two Individual crown. The Canal & Rivers Trust captain, Carl Nicholls drew peg J5 at Rawcliffe and fished worms and maggots with a groundbait feeder to take 40 skimmers to 2lb for 17.560Kg and claim the runner up spot. Maver North East’s Keith Mumby fished at the next peg F6 and fished the same methods as Carl catching 16.600Kg of skimmers to 3lb and taking individual third.

On the Team front, local knowledge paid dividends for Browning Ossett as they swept all aside and were crowned Division Two National Champions with an outstanding display. Though each angler was left to sort out their own pegs, their main plan was to target the roach with a squatt attack which saw them record 215pts out of a possible 250pts.

Preston Innovations Black Horse also gave us another impressive display of canal fishing and they weren’t too far behind, racking up 209pts. They too relied on a squatt attack for the roach but also started on the groundbait feeder which put a few bonus skimmers in the nets early on for them. Rounding out the top three were Sensas North who finished with 179pts.

The Angling Trust would like to thank local organisers Ian Hurst and Paul Caygill for running the event, Doncaster & District AA, the Boothferry Joint Committee and the Canals & Rivers Trust for use of their waters.

Next year’s Division Two National is to be held on the River Nene at Peterborough on the 8th of September and we hope to see a continued upsurge of interest in the contest.

A Look back at 2016

Sensas Black Country AS take Championship glory at the Angling Trust Division 2 National Angling Championship

A National Championship these days seems a cue for bad weather, the hot sunny weather in the days preceding the match was replaced overnight by cold persistent rain which lasted on and off throughout the day for the 280 competitors which dampened the sport on some sections, though surprisingly there were no blanks recorded on the Division 2 National Championship on Saturday 10th September 2016 on the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal.

The early 20’s in E section at Forge Lane were rumoured to be the area to draw for Individual success and so it proved as the anglers on pegs E23 to E25 shared a large shoal of bream to take the top 3 individual places.  Roger Abnett (Stoke on Trent AA) on peg E25 caught 15 bream to 3lb by fishing small red worms over chopped worm and caster on long pole towards the far bank and was crowned Division 2 Champion with 14.870kg.  Next door at peg E24 was Simon Wain (Slaithwaite AC) who fished similar tactics to take 12 bream for 12.540kg and Colin Smith (Matrix Halifax CRFT), who caught all his fish in the first 3 hours, at peg E23 took 3rd spot also with 12 bream for 12.210kg.

The team result was a really tight affair with only 4 points separating the top 5 teams and it was Sensas Black Country AS who came out on top with 205 points.  Matrix Halifax CRT were helped into 2nd place by virtue of a large weight advantage (48.470kg) after 3 of their anglers finished in the top 5, the team tying on points with Drennan Oxford (19.220kg), both with 204 points.  Browning West Midlands (202 points) and Drennan North West (201 points).

The Angling Trust would like to thank Stirrup Cup, Dams and Lock and Kingsbury and the Canal & River Trust for use of their waters and also Local Organiser Ted Yearby and his team for their help.
